TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government has stopped the inspections of 11 units of Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft operating in Indonesia. The decision was made after the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered the grounding of the aircraft.

The Transportation Ministry's director of aircraft airworthiness and operation (DKPPU) Capt. Avirianto said that four units of Boeing 737 Max jets were being inspected. One belonging to Garuda Indonesia and the other three Lion Air.

"There's no need to continue [the inspection]. They can't fly anymore," the captain said.

FAA administrator, Daniel K. Elwell issued a letter dubbed 'Order of Emergency Prohibition'. It highlighted the chronological similarity in two airplane crashes involving the 737 Max-8; Ethiopian Airlines' flight ET-302 and Lion Air's flight JT-610.

Elwell issued the letter to prohibit the aircraft from flying after holding a direct meeting with Boeing Co. and President Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, Garuda Indonesia CEO will cancel its order for 49 units of the Boeing 737 Max 8. Garuda CEO Ari Askhara said the airline had lost confidence in Boeing after two crashes over the course of six months.

Lion Group has also delayed the purchase of 222 Boeing 737 Max since October 2018 until the final result of the JT 610 accident investigation is released.
